Sun Valley, Idaho is an idyllic village that hosts world class skiing and skating in the winter and pristine hiking trails and sports in the summer. Just outside of Ketchum, and filled with people eager to learn about Spiritual Responsibility, we watched an amazing transformation. While we were there, one of our students provided us with a beautiful example of what it means to be spiritually responsible that we would like to share with you:
She is one of those people who just naturally has a big light inside that needs to be shared with the world. We all shine of course, but her blueprint showed me a person who could shine in a way that people would take notice and pay attention. She has spent a considerable amount of her life fighting her blueprint and trying to hide her gifts and talents and be less than who she really is, including giving up much of herself to be in a relationship. She gave up material possessions that were important to her, did not always voice her true feelings for fear of being left alone, and in general, stuffing what she needed, felt and wanted just for the security of a relationship. (Not surprisingly, her partner shared feelings of being smothered). She told us that at times she felt depressed, wondering what her purpose in life was, unhappy in her personal life and wondering whether it was all really worth it or not. She found herself often doing things she didn’t’ really want to be doing or hiding her true feelings for fear of causing disruption to those around her.
Remember, a while ago we shared with you the definition of Spiritual Responsibility: “living truly and truly living.” Our student was doing neither and it showed in her face and posture. Her Priority Task was to give up her investment in other people thinking more highly of her than she thought of herself. Now, you may ask, what does this have to do with her inner light? It is impossible to shine brightly when you are busy managing other people’s impressions of you. She took a huge risk during one of our events and began sharing truthfully and honestly with her partner and the group about her true feelings. It was a tough conversation, but the change in the energy was palpable to everyone in attendance.
Her willingness to do the work so quickly meant that the next Priority Task was quickly revealed: it was to change her tribal belief that people who own and share their gifts and talents are simply showing off; that having a bright light meant you were someone with a swelled head, prideful and arrogant. She suddenly recalled a pivotal life incident that occurred on the playground when she was in Kindergarten. She had been cruelly teased about something and the punch line of her playmates’ taunts was “you’re a show off and we don’t like you.” Like many, or most of our students, she has years of experience with growth kinds of experiences – workshops, therapy, retreats, you name it, she’s done it. She began to talk about the pain of this event and it was clear she could launch into a thorough and detailed examination of the event, her feelings, how it affected her, her personal pain about it and how it has held her back from expressing herself her whole life. I looked at her and said “you don’t have to go down that messy road. You have a choice right now to change the tribal belief and that will change everything.” She looked surprised, but said she would give a try. Once again, her willingness to change kicked in and when we saw her a few days later, she looked quite different – younger, shinier, more accessible, and much happier.
What is important here is that she could have so easily spent enormous amounts of time “processing” this painful incident from her past. On the other hand, she could change her Tribal Belief and begin anew. This is just one example of how the path of Spiritual Responsibility is so dynamic: the focus is on the present, and making different choices in the moment, once you are aware of the choice you have been making that has made you unhappy. Spending a lot of time processing, and understanding, keeps one in a static state. Our evolution and spiritual growth demands that we be dynamic, not static!
Our student made two important choices: to stop giving herself up for a secondary gain and to change a Tribal Belief that has controlled her entire adult life. It is changing her life for the better in all arenas and giving her a freedom she has not known before. She is making a choice to shine and since it is in alignment with her blueprint of who she is, she’s much now happier, and way more authentic, making her a safe person to engage with.
I contrast this to a woman at a workshop earlier this year when asked how long she knew she needed to get out of her marriage, took a deep breath and replied “about thirty years.” Folks, the Read is the Read. Energy does not lie, and until we deal with and change it, nothing else will change in your life. Avoiding it doesn’t change anything, not voicing your truth doesn’t change anything, and keeping those old Tribal Beliefs in place most certainly won’t change anything.
Give yourself a chance for a dynamic and wonderfully life. Ask yourself three questions:
What do I need to change in my life?
What is lowering my vibration and draining my energy?
What is contributing to my unhappiness?
Why not consider that today is a great day to change your life and live the life you so deserve!
Truth is like the wind: Even though you cannot always see it, you always feel it.
